 Peer Tutoring

The SUS Peer Tutoring program is a 100% free, volunteer-based tutoring service. We connect students with volunteer peer tutors in a multitude of Faculty of Science courses year-round. Our tutors are upper year students who graciously volunteer their time to tutor and have achieved at least an A- in the course(s) they would like to tutor. Pairing is done based on the course(s) of interest, as well as time availabilities, time zones, and whether group or one-on-one tutoring is preferred.

How to Get Involved

 In September, January, and select summer course months, students fill out applications found on our Facebook page to become tutors or tutees. Our pairing is done on a first-come-first-served basis, and students that we can pair are often able to meet as early as the fourth week of classes. Throughout the semester it is the responsibility of the tutor and tutee to stay in contact and decide on the frequency and format of the tutoring sessions (although we can offer any advice and assistance required).

 In order to have a record of tutoring completed we ask that an hours log, as well as a tutoring contract, be signed by all parties and returned to us by the end of the semester. This is especially important for tutors who require a reference of hours completed or verifier for applications to further studies.

Why Tutor?

 Volunteering your time to help other students over many months shows character that many graduate schools search for. In fact, it represents an excellent growth opportunity as you will acquire or perfect your tutoring skills through periodic sessions with your tutee(s). Peer Tutoring is also an excellent way to serve the McGill community by letting fellow students benefit from your personal experience in a casual setting while reviewing material that will consolidate your understanding of the subjects you tutor. Chances are that the subjects you are currently taking will require knowledge of what you’ve previously studied. To top it off, interacting with students and observing their learning process is stimulating both for you and the tutee. As a tutor, you will undoubtedly gain new perspectives on course material and possibly new approaches to learning.
